Sheynnis Palacios: First Miss Universe from Nicaragua, Making History

In the recent Miss Universe held in San Salvador, Sheynnis Palacios from Nicaragua emerged as the winner, making history as the first Nicaraguan to achieve this honor. The event also saw Anntonia Porsild from Thailand securing the first runner-up position.



Sheynnis Palacios had previously represented Nicaragua in the 2017 Teen Miss Universe contest, achieving a top 10 placement, and in the 2021 Miss World pageant. The competition included representatives from 84 countries, judged by a panel featuring well-known personalities like model Halima Aden, Carson Kressley from "Queer Eye," TikTok influencer Avani Gregg, and former The winners of Miss Universe are Janelle Commissiong and Iris Mittenaere.





The pageant began with 20 semi-finalists selected after the preliminary competition and a global fan vote. As the evening progressed, the swimsuit round narrowed the field to 10, which included diverse contestants like Miss Nepal and Miss Pakistan, the latter being the first to choose a burkini as her swimsuit. The subsequent evening gown round further reduced the participants.




In the final stage, three contenders remained: Palacios, Porsild, and Moraya Wilson from Australia. When asked about a person to spend a day with, Palacios chose the 18th-century philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, praising her for breaking boundaries and empowering women.



Expressing her thoughts through a translator, Palacios emphasized the limitless opportunities for women today. Her victory not only signifies her personal achievement but also celebrates the milestone of being the first Nicaraguan woman to win the Miss Universe title.
